Far Eastern Currents

Currents from the cultural dynamo that is Asia have been reaching the shores of Hawaii since its earliest days. The original Polynesians who later discovered Hawaii likely had some roots in South-East Asia. More recently, in the mid-nineteenth century, immigrants from South-East China arrived in Hawaii, at first to work on the sugar plantations, later merging into the Hawaiian cultural landscape. Japanese, Okinawans, and Koreans were soon to follow. In fact, just a century ago, about half the population of Maui was Japanese. Naturally, influence from the Far East has been strong.

Herein are presented scenes, perhaps suitable to accompany music from "Ulupalu Blue" by Quantum.
